Outbreak of C. difficile Declared at St. Mary’s General Hospital

Enhanced cleaning is underway.

Kitchener – In cooperation with Waterloo Region Public Health, St. Mary’s General Hospital declared an outbreak of C. difficile on four inpatient units Friday evening.

The outbreak was declared on Inpatient Cardiac and General Surgery (3W), Cardiology (3E) and the Chest Unit (600) and the Medical-Surgical Intensive Care Unit. In the affected areas, dedicated nursing is being provided for all positive cases and all patients are in isolation.

Enhanced cleaning is underway. While there are currently no visitor restrictions, visitors are asked, as always, to adhere to infection control practices. A certain number of patients with C. difficile infection are normally expected in hospital settings, and some fluctuation in rates over time can occur.

This is the first outbreak of C. difficile at St. Mary’s since 2012. “We have had consistently low rates of C. difficile for the past several years,” said Dr. William Ciccotelli, Medical Director, Infectious Diseases and Medical Microbiologist. “We are taking this situation very seriously and will work closely with Public Health to resolve it as quickly as possible,” he said.
