Concept design approval and agreement to go to Cambridge City Council April 18

Cambridge - At Wednesday's special meeting Cambridge City Council voted to defer approval of the concept design for the proposed multiplex facility until April 18, 2016. A final agreement between the City and Conestoga College is also scheduled for Council decision mid-April together with these concept designs.

“Bringing the multiplex concept design to Council with the final agreement in April will give Council and the community some time to review and digest all of the information presented,” explains Councillor Frank Monteiro. “After 20 years of discussions, it’s exciting to see such progress on the project while mindful that we want to make sure we’re building the right complex for our community.”

The concept design plan presented to Council yesterday recommended a double gymnasium; four NHL-sized ice pads (to be constructed in phases); an aquatic complex featuring a 25m, eight-lane pool, therapeutic pool and leisure pool; fitness room; fitness track; activities room; and display space.

“The report brought to Council takes into account extensive consultation from the community and proposes a multi-purpose facility that meets our community services mandate and reflects our community needs,” remarked Kent McVittie, deputy city manager, community services.

During the planning process, the City investigated and evaluated various potential sites throughout Cambridge before selecting the location at Conestoga College’s Cambridge campus. In April 2015, City Council authorized staff to proceed with the development of the multi-purpose sport and recreation facility and to develop a formal agreement related to the long-term operation of the facility.

A memorandum of understanding (MOU) between the City and Conestoga College was signed in 2015.
