Groundbreaking for MennoHomes Affordable Housing in Elmira Friday April 29th

Elmira - MennoHomes, a charitable organization that builds and rents affordable housing in Waterloo Region, will have the official groundbreaking ceremony for a new affordable housing project in Elmira on Friday April 29th.

The event will be held at 7 Memorial Ave. in Elmira at 3:00 p.m.. Guests will include Harold Albrecht, MP Kitchener-Conestoga, Michael Harris, MPP Kitchener-Conestoga, Ken Seiling, Chair, Region of Waterloo, and Sandy Shantz, Mayor, Woolwich Township.

Construction of this new 25 unit affordable housing project is set to begin in May. Construction is estimated to take one year. The building will consist of 14 one-bedroom units, 9 two-bedroom units, and 2 three-bedroom units. A key feature of this building will be an elevator to provide barrier-free affordable housing for residents of Elmira.

MennoHomes is in the midst of a $3.1 million capital campaign and has raised $1.9 million in donations and pledges towards this goal. The project has also received an allocation from The Region of Waterloo for an additional $1.7 million under the Affordable Housing Strategy.
