Asymptomatic testing for school staff at local pharmacies

As part of an enhanced testing strategy to support in-person learning in Ontario, Region of Waterloo Public Health has worked with the Province on the expansion of asymptomatic testing at pharmacies to include school staff.

Interested school/board staff will need to make an appointment at participating pharmacies and provide the name of their school/board office. School boards will provide staff with a list of pharmacies where this testing is now available. Testing is voluntary.

This is an expansion of the asymptomatic testing currently offered at participating pharmacies for groups such as:

• a visitor or worker in a long-term care home
• a worker in a retirement home
• a resident or worker in a homeless shelter or other congregate setting (for example, group homes, community supported living, disability-specific communities or congregate settings, short-term rehab, hospices and other shelters)
• a farm worker
• a person who identifies as Indigenous
• an international student that has passed their 14-day quarantine period

“We are grateful to the Ontario government and Region of Waterloo Public Health for making available COVID-19 testing of asymptomatic school staff,” said Loretta Notten, Director of Education for the Waterloo Catholic District School Board. “This is another important step in keeping our learning environments safe, as we continue working hard to stop the spread of COVID-19.”

“We are in full-support of the plan to offer asymptomatic testing in pharmacies to school staff,” said John Bryant (photo), Director of Education for the Waterloo Region District School Board. “Keeping students, staff, and families safe is of the utmost importance so we can focus on learning.”

It remains essential that anyone who develops symptoms, even if only mild symptoms, stay home, isolate from others, and make an appointment for testing at a local assessment centre. Local assessment centres are available for anyone experiencing symptoms as well as anyone who is a close contact for a confirmed case or has been otherwise directed by Public Health to be tested.
