University of Ottawa professor appointed first research chair in computational science and engineering

OTTAWA — Professor Stavros Tavoularis of the Department of Mechanical Engineering has been selected as the first holder of the HPCVL/SUN Microsystems Research Chair in Computational Science and Engineering.

The appointment comes with $500,000 in support for a research program on nuclear reactor thermal hydraulics. Dr. Tavoularis's groundbreaking work will help the Canadian nuclear industry develop more advanced tools for analyzing the safety of current and future reactors.

Dr. Tavoularis, one of the original investigators to establish the High Performance Computing Virtual Laboratory (HPCVL), was selected for his eminent contribution to vital research in Canada. He is an internationally acclaimed researcher on turbulence, and his research work has long served as a primary benchmark for the conceptualization and optimal adjustment of turbulence theories and numerical schemes.

The High Performance Computing Virtual Laboratory (HPCVL) is a supercomputing consortium comprising several academic institutions, including the University of Ottawa. In addition to reliable and secure computing, HPCVL provides storage resources and support to over 13 Canadian research groups. It is one of Canada's leading secure, high-performance computing environments.

The University of Ottawa is committed to research excellence and encourages an interdisciplinary approach to knowledge creation, which attracts the best academic talent from across Canada and around the world.
