International stars headline New Hamburg Live! Festival

New Hamburg - The third annual New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts, which runs now through to June 5, features a full roster of performers and stars with national and international reputations.

For example, concert pianist Katherine Chi, who performs Saturday evening, arrives from Boston to do the New Hamburg concert, after recent engagements in Washington, Ottawa, London England. She has performed throughout Europe and the United States. Her New Hamburg Live! concert is part of the day-long tribute to Franz Liszt.

The Festival opened Tuesday evening with the premiere of a one-man show,Tales of the Theatre², by actor and playwright Barry MacGregor, who has starred on Broadway, and at the Shaw and Stratford theatres.

Friday evening sees a Festival highlight ­ a concert by Newfoundland¹s ³The Irish Descendants², who travel the world, delighting audiences with their kitchen party Celtic music.

Other concerts star Canadian performers who have toured well beyond this country²s borders ­ The Essentials (Wednesday, at the Festival Gala); The Windermere String Quartet, Thursday; mezzo soprano Vicki St. Pierre (noon, Saturday), and the innovative young group, DuO Percussion, Friday afternoon.

Sunday afternoon sees some of the finest gospel musicians in Canada gather for an all-star concert highlighted by performances by Denise Pelley and Hiram Joseph.

The New Hamburg Live! Festival of the Arts also includes a 20-artist visual art show, and literary event featuring award-winning authors Merilyn Simonds and Edeet Ravel, each of whom has just released a new book.
