Consulting services for 2013

Ottawa - The management, scientific and technical consulting services industry group in Canada reported $17.3 billion in operating revenue and $12.4 billion in operating expenses in 2013, resulting in an operating profit margin of 28.4%.

Firms engaged in providing management consulting services generated 66.0% of the industry group's revenue, while the remainder was split between businesses engaged in environmental consulting and other scientific and technical consulting (34.0%).

Salaries, wages, commissions and benefits was the largest expense item in this knowledge-intensive industry, accounting for 42.2% of operating expenses in 2013.

Sales to the business sector made up 72.6% of total sales while the government, not-for-profit organizations and public institutions share stood at 13.4%, followed by clients outside Canada (8.7%) and individuals and households (5.6%).
